Human Impact Safety & Anti-Bandit Security

Approved Document K regulates critical impact zones below 800mm and doors below 1500mm, requiring Class 1C1 (toughened) or Class 1B1/2B2 (laminated) impact safety. Anti-bandit and attack glazing is classified separately under BS EN 356 (P1A to P5A).

UK Regulatory Mandate:Critical safety locations under Approved Document K require permanent visible indelible safety kite-marks on every pane.

1. Pendulum Impact Test (BS EN 12600)

Tests a 50kg dual-tyre pendulum dropped from 190mm (Class 3), 450mm (Class 2), and 1200mm (Class 1). Mode A = Annealed (dangerous shards); Mode B = Laminated (fragments adhere to interlayer); Mode C = Toughened (granular dice).

2. Security Glazing Resistance (BS EN 356)

Class P1A to P5A drops a 4.11kg hard steel sphere from heights up to 9m. For commercial jewelry and retail applications, Class P4A or P6B (manual axe and sledgehammer resistance) is standard.

Critical Specification Pitfalls to Avoid

  • •Obscuring safety kite-marks behind deep frame rebates during installation
  • •Confusing ordinary safety glass with certified attack-resistant security glass
