Candidate Glass Constructions for Scarborough Projects

Option 0110mm – 12mm Monolithic

10mm or 12mm Monolithic Toughened Glass with Ceramic Manifestation

Best Suited For:Standard urban street bus shelters and suburban passenger waiting canopies.
Engineering Trade-Offs:High mechanical bending strength resisting wind buffeting; fractures safely into granular dice if vandalized; rapid, economical replacement.
Option 0210.8mm (5+0.76+5) – 12.8mm (6+0.76+6)

10.8mm or 12.8mm Toughened Laminated Glass with Sacrificial Anti-Graffiti Film

Best Suited For:High-vandalism city center transit hubs, railway station platform waiting rooms, and unstaffed rural shelters.
Engineering Trade-Offs:Interlayer retains broken glass in frame, preventing shattered glass falling onto waiting passengers; replaceable surface film protects against acid graffiti etching.
Option 0313.52mm (6+1.52+6)

13.52mm Toughened Laminated Cantilever Roof Glazing

Best Suited For:Overhead passenger shelter canopies, bus station concourses, and walkway covers.
Engineering Trade-Offs:Withstands combined snow loads and maintenance point loads; mandatory laminated construction prevents overhead drop in the event of impact.

Architectural Design & Safety Checklist

Calculate dynamic wind suction to BS EN 1991-1-4 (Eurocode 1) incorporating aerodynamic pressure pulses from passing buses and heavy HGVs.
Mandate visual manifestation markers complying with Approved Document M and the Equality Act (two contrasting bands or municipal crests).
Detail tamper-resistant stainless steel clamp fixings (pin-torx or security shear nuts) to prevent unauthorized mechanical removal.
Specify ceramic frit dots or acid-etched manifestations to deter bird strikes on open-landscape rural highway shelters.

Governing British & European Standards

BS EN 12600 Class 1C1 or 1B1
Mandatory human impact safety compliance across all public transit shelter glazing.
BS EN 1991-1-4 (Eurocode 1: Actions on Structures)
Structural verification under localized wind gust and vehicle aerodynamic shock pressures.
Approved Document M / DDA
High-visibility manifestation indicators between 850–1000mm and 1400–1600mm above pavement.

Scarborough Site Logistics & Crane Handling

Lifting Equipment:Standard manual suction handling within HSE guidelines (<20kg per person).
Structural Substrate:Shelter steel/aluminium posts must be cast into concrete foundations designed for overturning moments from high wind speeds.
Site Tolerances:Glazing channel gaskets must absorb highway ground vibration without transmitting localized pinch points into glass edges.
