Technical Evaluation

Candidate Glass Constructions for Folkestone Projects

Option 0121.52mm (10+1.52+10)

21.52mm Toughened Laminated with Structural Ionoplast (SentryGlas)

Best Suited For:Retail mezzanine perimeters and atrium voids where retail crowds congregate.

Engineering Trade-Offs:Meets 1.5 kN/m line load to BS 6180; structural ionoplast ensures glass remains 100% upright and retains barrier containment even if both glass plies fracture.

Option 0225.52mm (12+1.52+12) + 150mm Stainless Steel Clad Base Bumper

25.52mm Heavy-Duty Cantilever Glass with Integrated Base Stainless Kickplate

Best Suited For:Ground floor shopping trolley holding bays, travelator sides, and retail loading dock walkways.

Engineering Trade-Offs:Sacrificial stainless steel bumper absorbs repetitive caster and metal wheel shocks without chipping the lower glass edge.

Option 0317.52mm (8+1.52+8)

17.52mm Toughened Laminated Glass with Continuous Top Handrail

Best Suited For:Internal store department dividers and customer cafe perimeter enclosures.

Engineering Trade-Offs:Economical specification compliant with BS 6180 when tied to a continuous structural handrail that spans load across adjacent panels.

Architectural Design & Safety Checklist

Verify design line load to BS 6180 Table 2: 1.5 kN/m for general retail shopping areas; 3.0 kN/m for areas where retail crowds congregate under fire evacuation or on stairs.

Check BS 6180:2011 Clause 6.4.1 deflection limits: Handrail / top edge displacement must NOT exceed 25mm under design load.

Incorporate a minimum 100–150mm bottom kick-plate or protective stainless steel upstand to protect lower glass edges against metal shopping trolley caster collisions.

Check resistance against chemical cleaning agents: Supermarket floor scrubbers utilize alkaline and acidic sanitizers that degrade standard PVB if channels are unsealed.

Comply with Approved Document K non-climbability rules: Zero horizontal climbing rungs between 100mm and 900mm from floor level.

Governing British & European Standards

BS 6180:2011 Table 2

Mandatory 1.50 kN/m to 3.00 kN/m horizontal design line load for retail shopping areas and max 25mm top edge deflection.

Approved Document K (Section 3)

Minimum barrier height 1100mm on mezzanines; maximum 100mm sphere gap clearance across entire elevation.

BS EN 12600 Class 1B1

Mandatory safety containment rating to eliminate risk of laceration or barrier breach.

Folkestone Site Logistics & Crane Handling

Lifting Equipment:Oversized panels require spider crane or vacuum lifter offloading.

Structural Substrate:Mezzanine structural steel beams must be detailed with web stiffeners to resist the severe rotational torque imparted by the 1.1m cantilever arm.

Site Tolerances:Base shoe channel must be leveled with structural grout (±1mm over 3m) to eliminate top-edge glass misalignment.
