Technical Evaluation

Candidate Glass Constructions for Borehamwood Projects

Option 0114mm – 18mm Multi-Ply Intumescent

EI30 Intumescent Fire-Resistant Safety Glass

Best Suited For:Classroom corridor dividing walls, library partitions, and secondary circulation routes.

Engineering Trade-Offs:Provides full 30-minute integrity and thermal insulation (surface temperature < 140°C rise) preventing clothes from igniting; dual-certified to Class 1B1 impact safety.

Option 0223mm – 28mm Multi-Ply Intumescent in Certified Steel/Hardwood Frame

EI60 Heavy-Duty Intumescent Glazed Assembly

Best Suited For:Protected primary vertical escape stairwells, school atriums, and sports hall fire separation screens.

Engineering Trade-Offs:60 minutes full fire containment; substantially heavier dead-weight (~60 kg/m²) requiring structural frame anchors and heavy-duty pivot hinges.

Option 037mm – 11mm Modified Toughened / Gel Fire Glass

E30 / EW30 High-Level Transom Glazing

Best Suited For:High-level clerestory corridor fanlights above 2200mm where thermal radiation does not endanger escaping pupils.

Engineering Trade-Offs:Lower cost per m²; strictly limited to locations where full insulation (EI) is not mandated by the school fire risk assessment.

Architectural Design & Safety Checklist

Verify adherence to Building Bulletin 100 (BB100: Design for fire safety in schools) and Approved Document B.

Mandate dual certification: All glass below 1500mm in school doors and below 800mm in corridor screens MUST achieve both fire rating (EI) and BS EN 12600 Class 1B1 impact safety.

Verify permanent indelible fire safety kitemarks are visible after framing beads are fitted (essential for Building Control / Fire Authority sign-off).

Specify edge tape protection: Intumescent fire interlayers are sensitive to moisture and UV degradation; verify sealed perimeter tapes are intact prior to glazing.

Ensure door vision panels comply with Approved Document M: minimum glazed zone between 500mm and 1500mm from floor level to ensure small children and wheelchair users are visible.

Governing British & European Standards

Building Bulletin 100 (BB100)

Mandatory UK Government standard governing fire safety design, compartmentation, and escape routes in school buildings.

BS EN 13501-2 & BS 476-22

European and British fire classification: Integrity (E), Radiation Control (EW), and Thermal Insulation (EI).

BS EN 12600 Class 1B1

Highest level of impact safety preventing bodily puncture or laceration in active school circulation zones.

Borehamwood Site Logistics & Crane Handling

Lifting Equipment:Standard manual suction handling within HSE guidelines (<20kg per person).

Structural Substrate:Timber and steel fire frames must be secured with certified fire-rated fixings and intumescent mastic backing matching the Warringtonfire/Certifire test scope.

Site Tolerances:Glass pane expansion gap (typically 4–5mm per perimeter side) must strictly follow the fire test field of application report.
