Commercial & Architectural Mirrors

Copper-free silvered reflective surfaces engineered with safety backing and high-humidity corrosion resistance.

Engineering Definition: High-clarity float glass silvered with pure metallic silver, passivated with environmentally friendly copper-free chemical conversion layers, and protected by multi-coat protective polymer backing paints (BS EN 1036-1).

Physical & Mechanical Performance Characteristics
Safety Class:Class 2B2 when fitted with cross-linked polypropylene woven safety backing film
Bending Strength:Equivalent to annealed float; requires continuous wall substrate support
Thermal Shock Resistance:Standard annealed mirror: ~40°C max temperature difference (do not place behind unshielded cookers)
Fracture Behaviour:Safety backed mirror fractures into adhered shards held securely by structural backing tape
Typical U-Value (Ug):5.8 W/m²K (monolithic wall cladding)
Acoustic Reduction (Rw):Rw 29 dB to 31 dB
Max Sheet Dimension:Up to 2440mm × 3660mm (jumbo mirror sheets)
Density & Mass:2.50 kg/m² per mm glass thickness (4mm = 10 kg/m², 6mm = 15 kg/m²)

Key Architectural Advantages

  • •High optical fidelity: low-iron mirror substrate eliminates greenish tint for accurate retail lighting and skin tone rendering
  • •Corrosion endurance: copper-free coating resists black-edge oxidation in high-humidity commercial bathrooms, spas, and gyms
  • •Safety backing prevents flying shards and laceration injury in commercial public washrooms and fitness centers

Critical Engineering Constraints

  • •Standard silvered mirrors CANNOT be thermally toughened after silvering (silver burns off in 620°C furnace)
  • •Must only be mounted with mirror-specific non-corrosive neutral adhesive (solvent-based contact adhesives destroy silver backing)
  • •Substrate wall must be completely dry and flat; uneven adhesive beads cause distorted optical reflection ("funhouse mirror" effect)

Fabrication & Edge Processing Tolerances

Cut After Toughening:Permitted (Cold Cut)
Heat Soak Testing (HST):Not Required

All hole drilling and socket cut-outs must be deburred and arrissed before mounting.

Architectural Specifier Checklist

Verify these technical criteria prior to contract documentation:

1Mandate BS EN 1036-1 compliance to verify copper-free and lead-free environmental formulation.
2Specify Safety Backing Film (BS EN 12600 2B2) for all public, commercial, or accessible locations.
3Specify 100% solvent-free neutral cure mirror adhesive and mechanical bottom J-channels for heavy panels.
