Commercial Balustrades, Barriers & Juliet Balconies

Structural cantilever glass barriers engineered to resist crowd crush, edge impact, and catastrophic falls to BS 6180.

Specifier Problem & Project Context: Contractors and developers face complex regulatory liabilities under BS 6180, confusing interlayer requirements, and strict non-combustibility rules for commercial atriums, mezzanine edges, and rooftop terraces.

Candidate Glass Constructions & Practical Trade-Offs

Option 0112mm – 15mm

Monolithic 12mm or 15mm Toughened Glass with Top Continuous Handrail

Recommended When:Fully framed or post-and-clamp balustrades where continuous handrail supports adjacent panes if one fractures.
Trade-Offs & Limits:Economical, but STRICTLY PROHIBITED in frameless cantilever systems without handrails due to zero post-breakage barrier retention.
Option 0217.52mm (8+1.52+8) – 21.52mm (10+1.52+10)

17.52mm or 21.52mm Toughened Laminated Glass with Standard PVB

Recommended When:Internal commercial office atriums and retail mezzanines with ambient indoor temperatures.
Trade-Offs & Limits:Complies with BS 6180 for low-to-medium line loads (0.74 kN/m); however standard PVB softens at elevated temperatures (>30°C) and can sag post-breakage.
Option 0321.52mm – 25.52mm

21.52mm or 25.52mm Toughened Laminated Glass with Structural Ionoplast Interlayer (SentryGlas)

Recommended When:External rooftop bars, stadium crush barriers (1.5 to 3.0 kN/m), and high-traffic shopping mall atriums.
Trade-Offs & Limits:Structural ionoplast is 100× stiffer and 5× tear resistant compared to PVB; remains completely upright and functional even if BOTH glass panes fracture.

Architectural Design Checklist

Establish occupancy type to determine design line load to BS 6180 (e.g. 0.74 kN/m for offices; 1.5 kN/m for retail public areas; 3.0 kN/m for nightclub or stadium crowds).
Determine if a continuous handrail is fitted: If omitting handrail, glass MUST be laminated and structurally verified to withstand post-breakage load on remaining ply.
Detail base channel drainage: External base shoes must have drain blocks at 300mm centers to prevent trapped water degrading laminated edge interlayers.
Verify base substrate anchoring: Structural concrete slab must support bending moment induced by glass cantilever arm (e.g. 1.1m barrier height).

Statutory UK Building Regulations

BS 6180:2011 Barriers in and about buildings
Defines line load (kN/m), uniformly distributed load (kN/m²), and concentrated point load (kN) criteria.
Approved Document K (Section 3)
Minimum barrier heights: 900mm for internal stairs/landings; 1100mm for external balconies and atriums.
BS EN 12600 Class 1B1
Mandatory highest safety containment impact classification.

Installation & Site Access Logistics

Crane & Vacuum Lifters:Mandatory for high-level, thick multi-ply, or oversized panels.
Substrate Fixings:Concrete substrate must be C25/30 minimum; anchor bolt edge distances must strictly comply with ETA technical assessment sheets to prevent concrete cone breakout.
Site Tolerances:Base shoe channel must be shimmed perfectly level (±1mm over 3m) using high-compressive structural grout; slight channel tilt creates large glass alignment discrepancies at top edge.

Procurement Advice: Supply-Only vs Turnkey

Balustrade systems represent critical life-safety containment. Structural glass calculations signed by a chartered structural engineer (MIStructE) are mandatory for building control sign-off.
